Ok internet it is confession time; I love geek stuff. I love nerd stuff. While I have never quite been into the comic book scene I have always enjoyed other aspects of the nerd persona; computers, video games, the occasional fantasy novel. I was looking for a shop that catered to my tastes; a place that sold the kind of merchandise I would want to buy. Referential stuff; stuff that’s not obviously nerdy or geeky but is subtle enough that only a select few “super fans” would get it.
So I found Forbidden Planet. A shop that caters to the entire range of nerds; ranging from classic Star Wars figurines and posters all the way to the more obscure of the Japanese anime world. There’s figures, there’s manga, there’s comic books, t shirts, toys and anything you could possibly imagine or want. With a friendly atmosphere, nice staff a the huge range on offer it’s a great place to express yourself.

We all have favourite shops. We like the staff, or we like the products or any combination of things that make that our favourite place to shop. That is good; we know what to expect, we feel safe and we feel like the shop understands and caters to our needs. The problem with that, especially if it’s a grocery store or supermarket, is that we start to limit ourselves to other services, other people and other products.

 

Going to new supermarkets in a practical sense makes more sense anyway; you can try out other products from their own brand ranges and see which you prefer, but you also get a better idea of prices from other supermarkets on your favourite products. By letting yourself get sucked into brand loyalty you find yourself blinded to the values of other places, and you might even save yourself a bit of money as well.

 

My local town has very few shops of note. In fact, if you are a man, there is even less than you might expect from anywhere in the world. If you want clothes you are going to have go elsewhere. Luckily we have somewhere within a short commuting distance that has everything we need. The Birmingham Bullring is almost a decade old now, but for those of us out in the sticks it is the perfect place to go to catch up on fashion, coffee and anything else you might need.

This big collection of shops and restaurants is perfect for a lot of situations. Taking a girl on a first date? There’s an enormous amount of places to eat from all over the world; cheap places, expensive ones, champagne bars and oyster bars to treat people to, but if you’re going with friends there’s a lot of activities to do, a lot of clothes shops to update your look.

 

Once the foremost format for listening to music; Vinyl has had an amazing existence, and recent turnaround. Following vinyl’s slow demise and the rise of the Compact Disc people assumed that the older format was sure to die out. Sure enough its popularity waned, as people moved from CDs onto MP3 players and, more recently, Apple’s all conquering iPod.

Something was brewing though; fans of retro attachments and hipsters were slowly reclaiming vinyl. At first it was a novelty; a deliberate stand against modernity and the rapid progression of technology. Soon enough, though, you could buy turntables and vinyl players that attached via USB to computers and laptops. They key element though was the sound. Once people went back to Vinyls they realised the huge improvement in sound quality over the more modern formats, and slowly but surely more modern albums are releasing on iTunes, CD and on Vinyl. Over the years many types of payment have been in vogue; back in the day it was cash, then cheques, the credit cards became the only way people spent money, before (and what I’m used to) debit cards hit the mainstream. It got to such a point where I rarely had cash with me when I left the house. In fact I may as well not have had a wallet at all given I only ever carried my debit card with me.
